Vva. de la Concepción, a town steeped in history.
Despite its youth as a town, Villanueva de la Concepción delves into a history that dates back to the dawn of humanity. This region, which served as a natural passage between the Antequera region and the Montes de Málaga, has witnessed the presence of various civilizations over the centuries.
In prehistoric times, it was already inhabited, and traces of human settlements have been discovered dating back to the Middle Paleolithic. During the Neolithic period, polished stone axes were found in various places, evidence of human presence in the area.
The history of Villanueva de la Concepción intertwines with that of the ancient Roman city of Osqva, mentioned by historians such as Titus Livius and Pliny. This city, which had temples, a forum, a theater, and other services, left a legacy that continues in the municipality's coat of arms, represented by a reclining lion.
During the Islamic era, this region was part of a belt of castles that defended the passage to the city of Malaga. The castle of Xébar, located in what is now Villanueva de la Concepción, played a crucial role in this defensive system.
After the conquest of Antequera in 1410, the Nasrids retook and looted the castle of Xébar, highlighting its strategic importance. However, over time, the castle lost its value and fell into ruins.
The 18th century saw the region revived with the construction of the Royal Road that connected Malaga and Madrid. Farms and country estates were established along this important route, laying the foundation for the present town.
Finally, on November 3, 1880, Villanueva de la Concepción was officially established as a Rural Population and later, in 2001, as an Autonomous Local Entity. In 2007, the Andalusian Regional Government recognized its right to independence from Antequera, marking the beginning of its autonomy as a municipality.
On March 17, 2009, the Council of Government of the Andalusian Regional Government formalized the establishment of Villanueva de la Concepción as the 101st municipality in the province of Malaga, thus culminating its long struggle for emancipation. This young locality continues to write its history with a spirit of independence and constant growth.
